沼氣生物脫硫是20世紀90年代發展起來的新技術，是在常溫常壓下利用利用微生物實現硫的價態轉換的一種新技術。生物脫硫工藝過程是將一定量的空氣導入含有硫化氫的沼氣中，在反應器內裝有大量的生物填料，它們為細菌繁殖提供充分的空間。營養液的循環使填料保持潮濕狀態，并補充細菌生長繁殖所需營養。專屬絲硫菌屬、硫桿菌屬在新陳代謝的過程中吸收硫化氫，并將他們轉化為單質硫，進而轉化為硫酸。
